Debate tournaments are the heart of Dallas Urban Debate programs, and are typically held on Saturday throughout the school year. Tournaments provide debaters an opportunity to put their advocacy, research, and critical thinking skills to the test by competing with teams from other DISD schools in an effort to convince a judge of their position. By practicing, winning or losing, reworking their position, adding new evidence or creating different arguments, debaters discover a paradigm for learning about any subject, however simple or complex.
We host 3 types of events each semester:
Workshops - designed to introduce new students to debate and offer expert instruction to experienced students on advanced debate concepts.
Tournaments - offering students the chance to hone their skills and get feedback throughout the year.
Championships - at the end of each year, we host championship tournaments. These events to be longer and more rigorous. While there are no eligibility requirements to register, these events tend to have high rates of attendance - unfortunately, this means we may have to turn some students away as a result of venue space limitations. We suggest choosing your strongest and most active debaters for these events.
